Thinking about my Dad again today. (See Tip # 621).
Our family business had what in 1970 passed as a pretty darn good Major Medical Plan, covering about 125 employees. The lifetime maximum sticks in my head because Dad’s episode of care – consisting of surgery and follow up treatment over just three months – approached the $50,000
limit.
Today there are NO lifetime limits on most Plans.
And, what about cost?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2025 salaries average $31.89 per hour accounting for 70.3 percent of employer
costs, while benefits average $13.49 per hour accounting for the remaining 29.7 percent. (Seems a little low to me.) More HERE.
There may actually be some payroll records from 1970 in my storage locker. I’ll save that search for a rainy day when I have an ample supply of SSRIs!
Another comparison of note.
Ted Kennedy and John McCain died from the same cancer as Dad; the former living just 15 months after diagnosis, the latter 13
months.
And the cost for those additional months?

Miss you, Dad.
Happy Father’s Day.
