Without hesitation I replied, when he turns 26.
Thanks to Obamacare, that's been generally well known for years (details HERE).
That being the case, when she said her dentist insisted it was 27, I wagered a dollar, that while I didn’t know squat about molars, I did know a little about insurance.
Turns out Wisconsin health insurers can provide coverage for adult age children to age 27. (Other criteria HERE.)
And of course, the one carrier (apparently) that opted into this more liberal rule insures this client.
Busted!
Related; a 'child' aging out of a parent’s health plan has at least two ways to pick up their own coverage:
- stay on their parent’s plan through a COBRA election
- purchase an individual plan using the Special Election Period (SEP) that results from losing dependent
status.
Bet the darn dentist doesn’t know that.
P.S. Dr. Smarty Pants, do your patients know about the ARPA Special Election Period i.e., most anyone can buy health insurance through August 15th? BTW, agents can help. Ditto with dental insurance (and you’ll like this), for which there’s always an open enrollment!
