Last week I wrote about cancer patient Phil and left you hanging. Warning: I’m gonna do it again.
Meet Patient Two.
Mid December, Zach began experiencing symptoms his Primary Care Physician (PCP) - an employee of Mega Health System X - thought could be MS. Following multiple tests and scans - at MHS X, of course - Zach called me.
“I’m not sure these folks know what they’re doing. Can you tell me who in metro Milwaukee is ‘expert’ at treating MS?”
I do have a go to resource; a brilliant local surgeon whose (often blunt) opinion I value.
“I wouldn’t recommend anyone here! And especially not at MHS X,” he said. “Have your friend check out these links describing how they treat MS at Mayo or Johns Hopkins.”
Zach is bright and proactive, and was doing his own research, too. He had made an appointment at another local Jumbo System Z, but now he wanted to know if Mayo or other centers of excellence were in his health plan’s network.
So many opinions. So many choices. Zach is confused, stressed and justifiably unhappy.
Me, too. Why?
I’ll wrap up the Phil and Zach ‘tales’ next week.
