Now suppose, you’re having the classic symptoms of a heart attack. (There’s a cheerful thought. Sorry.)
You call 911. Will the local first responders take you to the nearest hospital? Is that where you want to be? If you called instead, a private ambulance company, could you dictate your preferred destination?
Stick with me for another ‘suppose’ or two.
Your primary care physician is part of Mega Health System A, which is the repository of all your medical records. If admitted to a hospital in a different System, will they have access to those records? Will your PCP even know about your admission and be able to treat you? Or, will you be assigned to a “Hospitalist” who will have to build a new
profile from scratch, when time matters?
And finally, does your spouse or significant other have health care Power of Attorney, if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself?
This time of year is Open Enrollment season. We’re helping countless clients select health insurance options to be financially prepared for the unexpected.
Please finish preparing.
