A shout out to IBAW for a fascinating presentation at their meeting this week; “In the Weeds” focused on workplace issues surrounding the legalization of some cannabinoids.
I learned there are two “natural compounds” in cannabis:
- THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) gets you high. (No doubt, how the Jump Around started!) In Wisconsin, even medical marijuana is (for now) illegal.
- CBD (cannabidiol) is used legally to make oils and other remedies said to reduce anxiety, pain and seizures while also enhancing sleep.
One presenter spoke about the pain he experienced following knee surgery, which didn’t respond to opioids but was greatly reduced by a not inexpensive CBD oil.
Another speaker was a Medical College of Wisconsin PhD (Cecelia Hillard) who had hard data suggesting CBDs while legal, can be
harmful.
CBD Specialty Shops are popping up everywhere. Before you warm up the car (or today, cool it down), do some homework (here, maybe).
Our health insurers know what Dr. Hillard knows, so don’t expect them to cover CBDs any time soon.
And if after consulting with your doctor, you insist on trying them anyway, don’t bother submitting the receipts to your FSA administrator.
They’re not an eligible expense.
