HOW MANY OPINIONS IS TOO MANY OPINIONS?
I read a short article in the April/May edition of Brain & Life published by the American Academy of Neurologists.
It described the persistence of a mother searching for the cause of forgetfulness, eye-rolling tics and poor coordination for her eight year old son. Doctor after doctor told her he would outgrow these symptoms but she persisted until finally an MRI confirmed an inoperable but benign brain tumor causing severe
hydrocephalus.
Makes me wonder:
How could so many doctors get it wrong? (A friend reminded me “50% of physicians graduated in the bottom half of their Class!”)
Was there ever a time when the Insurer questioned payment for so many consultations?
Couldn’t the Insurer have provided a Nurse or Case Manager to help work through this episode?
Save for the persistence of a strong advocate, this story might not have
had a happy ending.
Watch for a future Tip answering the above questions.
Because we all need to ‘rehearse’ for when the s#*t hits the fan!
