In the concluding chapter of Sapiens A Brief History of Humankind, Yuval Noah Harari writes that science is on the cusp of defying mortality

In recent decades, advances in medicine have been breathtaking. Almost weekly, we learn more.

For example, did you see this Press Release (February 8^th) from the Cleveland Clinic? OMG, a vaccine for (‘triple negative’) breast cancer!

One can only pray this and other lifesaving trials are being amply funded and, fast-tracked.

In this context, I was left flabbergasted after reading Friday’s Milwaukee Business Journal list of the 25 “Highest Paid Athletes in Wisconsin.” 

Collectively, their incomes total $370,000,000. 

That’s just the top 25. In Wisconsin. For one year!

Estimates (found HERE) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) show $731,000,000 was spent on breast cancer research in the (entire) U.S. in 2022. 

H-m-m-m-m-m. Let’s see if I have this right.

264,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, but just 25 athletes earn 50% of our total spend on breast cancer research.

That’s just fucked up!
