SHOULD WE INSURE WEIGHT LOSS MEDS?
When I ran into ‘Eric’ Wednesday, I hadn’t seen him in a while. I couldn’t help notice his weight loss and thought maybe he deserved a shout-out!
“You look great. Have you been working out?”
“Heck no,” he replied, “but I’ve been taking Ozempic and have lost 55 lbs. (!) in three
months.”
I had to know more.
Although not diabetic – the FDA approved use for Ozempic – Eric’s doc had given him a prescription. And it ain’t cheap! (GoodRx cost HERE.)
Coincidentally, the very next day The Wall Street
Journal ran a story - “New Use Saps Diabetes Drug” - about short supplies of Ozempic.
H-m-m-m-m-m.
Given these shortages, should doctors be allowed to write Ozempic prescriptions for non-diabetics?
Or maybe, considering Eric’s enhanced health (he’s off his BP meds and has stopped his weekly chiropractic visits), insurers should just cover weight loss meds. No doubt Pharma would ratchet up production.
Cha-ching!
Or, what if
Eric Et al. spent a fraction of the cost of Ozempic for a gym membership. It might take 24 months but he’d get the same result.
And we wouldn’t have to pick up the tab.
The Sender would like to Recall his Shout-out!
