LET'S TAKE CHARGE OF REFORMING HEALTHCARE - PART III
Continuing where we left off in Tip # 574, let’s look at what some consider a second fundamental flaw in our current health care system.
The incentives are back-ass-wards!
We reward volume.
The typical Primary Care Physician (PCP) is a captive employee of Mega Health System, so his/her ideal patient is a
non-compliant diabetic; i.e., an individual who despite this chronic condition, fails to make life-style changes and/or properly take medication.
Bad things happen to patients like that, making the bean counters at
Mega Health System happy!
Conversely, if somehow every patient was to magically work to eat healthy, exercise and fastidiously attend to preventive check-ups and wellness protocols, Mega would literally go
broke.
In Tip 576, we’ll continue this ‘diagnosis’ and after that, start thinking about a cure!
